In the spirit of Transparency and Doing the Right Thing, Scout & Cellar wanted to provide an easy-to-follow resource that can be shared when necessary about any taxes ‘passed-through’ to our Consultants and Customers residing in the following states.
Two states listed below have always had this tax passed through, but the remaining two have had these taxes passed through on orders only recently. As a result of some circumstances beyond our control, to this point, Scout & Cellar has not been passing the Alcohol Tax through to our customers, and has, instead, been paying these taxes to the states directly. We are now positioned to collect these taxes from customers, which is why you have seen or will see an increase in the taxes on yours and your customers orders.
Here are the details of the “alcohol” taxes that have recently been passed to consumers:
Pennsylvania – This state has an Alcohol Tax equaling $2.50 per gallon of wine. This total comes out to $0.49 per 750ml bottle of wine. This tax was charged during the month of April this year but was not an added charge on orders during the months of May and June. Starting on July 1, 2022, this tax has been passed through to the consumer. All Pennsylvania consultants were made aware of this tax in a communication sent by our Winery Team on July 1.
Kentucky – This state has an Alcohol Tax equaling 10% of the cost based on the wholesale price of wine (which is calculated at 70% of the retail price). Because the total of an order can fluctuate, the tax percentage charged to consumers can vary. This Alcohol tax was passed through to Kentucky consultants starting on April 1, 2022.
Colorado – A new Colorado state law states that all retail shipments delivered to Colorado by a motor vehicle (including carriers like FedEx and UPS) are subject to a 27-cent delivery fee. This includes direct-to-consumer wine shipments, such as those ordered through Scout & Cellar. This new $0.27 Retail Delivery Fee is the responsibility of the purchaser and will show as a separate line item on the invoice of each Scout & Cellar order with a CO shipping address. All consultants whose mailing address is in CO and all active Scout Circle or AutoSip subscribers with a CO address on the subscription were notified about this by email on Jul 1.
Both of the following taxes have always been collected on orders placed shipping to both states.
Kansas – Based on our license held in this state, we do not charge customers a “sales tax” by name, but rather a “Liquor Enforcement Tax”. The tax comes out to be 8% of the total on each order.
New Hampshire – This state has an 8% tax on Alcohol called a “direct shipping fee” that is passed through to consumers.
